thirdseason: Hey so I've seen your portfolio, and a lot of the type that you create. Is there any way you can video record the process from drawing, to creating it on Illustrator? Or do you know of any videos like this? I really want to create something and just need a bit of guidance:)
I haven’t shot a video of myself in the process of creating type or know of any video but now that you bring that up I should make one. I’ve always wondered how others did it but I kinda just figured out on my own what works for me.
Pretty much my process is sketching out the type first and getting that as refined as possible before scanning it in. I find that the more accurate it is on paper, the easier it will be to vector it. Next, I import the scan in to Illustrator and make guides for the baseline, x-height, and the cap height. Also I make guides for the vertical strokes. The guides help when placing points. I then trace out all the outlines of the type. Less points the better. Once everything is outlined I go over it and do some fine tuning: adjusting the stroke width, making the curves consistant, kerning, etc.
Hope this helped!
I’ll see what I can do about the video :)
